A complete overhaul of a 1950's mid-century modern house in the hills of Montclair, NJ. The home had seen several renovations through the years and had fallen on hard times. Our Clients wanted to update everything from the windows and roofing to the finishes and fixtures while maintaining the original spirit of theA complete overhaul of a 1950's mid-century modern house in the hills of Montclair, NJ. Our Clients wanted to update everything from the windows and roofing to the finishes and fixtures while maintaining the original spirit of the home.
Our intervention was subtle with some minor layout changes and a big move to open up the previously enclosed kitchen to the adjacent living and dining rooms and provide for views of New York City throughout the living space. Further, we simplified the interior finishes to by extending the existing terrazzo flooring throughout the kitchen level, refinishing the oak flooring elsewhere and introducing white oak veneer millwork throughout.
On the exterior, new windows with black frames replaced the old black aluminum units that had fallen apart over the years. And given the prominence of the sloping roof from various gathering spots outside the house, we switched from rolled asphalt roofing to a standing seam metal roof. Finally, the semi enclosed patio area was redesigned to include a new metal stair, an overlook balcony, planters and extensive seating areas. home.
